Take Notes No More!
I am so sick of telling my students "Read this chapter and take notes" but that is really what I would like them to do for each chapter. I feel that reading the text and taking notes on it is very beneficial to their understanding of the content. Is there any way I can help them understand the science content in the textbooks without saying "read this chapter and takes notes"? I would appreciate any suggestions!

Ksenia, do your students do the reading and notes? Are you just looking to add some variation? Or do you have trouble getting the students to complete the reading and you want something more effective?
This is for my AP biology class -- the students are very motivated, so they do the reading, but they always give me a heavy sigh when I assign it! just looking for some variation.
Sounds like a great class. With such motivated students you can really take some risks. In my IB Physics class I have provided Text Sets in some major units. These Text Sets are a combination of magazine articles, videos, books, and websites that the students can choose. That way you can appeal to different ability levels and interests. You can have the students give oral reports on their text choices so everyone in the class benefits without reading everything.
